Australians download tracing app

April 26th, 2020

More than a million Australians have downloaded a coronavirus contact tracing app. Users of the app will be notified if they have had more than 15 minutes of close contact with another user who tests positive for COVID19. Australia, with a population of around 25 million has had almost 7,000 confirmed cases and 96 deaths.

Citizens of Australia willingly downloaded an app that allows them to spy on one another. What happens when the pandemic is finished, do the apps get deleted? How infectious is a virus that takes up to 15 mins to transmit? Most countries caught in the first wave are already easing lockdowns and looking at ways to get back to normal. It seems pertinent to ask what that ‘normal’ is.
